IoTeX Rejects Traditional Roadmap for a Flexible 2026 Strategy

Written by Silvia Pavelli

The blockchain project behind a network of connected machines is scrapping its annual roadmap, arguing that in a world where AI rewrites the rules every few months, a fixed plan is a liability — not a promise.

In a recent blog post, the IoTeX team stated that the accelerating pace of technological change, particularly in AI, renders traditional roadmaps obsolete. “Any roadmap precise enough to look credible is precise enough to be wrong,” the company wrote, arguing that rigid plans can stifle the ability to adapt to unforeseen opportunities and challenges . IoTeX is a blockchain platform focused on connecting real-world devices and data to web3.

Instead of fixed quarterly milestones, IoTeX’s new approach is guided by three core challenges. The first is to position its network as a key interface for AI to interact with the physical world, focusing initially on turning live video streams into AI-readable data. The project aims to build a viable business model by providing this data to customers in sectors like retail analytics and workplace safety monitoring.

The second challenge is to enhance the network’s decentralization to a point where it can operate and evolve without reliance on the core development team. Key initiatives toward this goal include developing more secure, trustless methods for bridging to other blockchains using zero-knowledge proofs and exploring the use of AI to operate network validator nodes, which could lower operational costs and encourage broader participation.

The third challenge addresses the long-term financial sustainability of the protocol. IoTeX aims to move away from a model dependent on token inflation and instead fund its operations through revenue generated from its products and services. The stated goal is to create a feedback loop where product revenue funds core development and a buyback-and-burn program for its native IOTX token, similar to how a public company returns value to shareholders.

This strategic pivot follows a year of significant developments for IoTeX. In 2025, the project launched several key initiatives, including Quicksilver, a protocol for AI data verification, and ioID, a system for creating unique digital identities for machines . The company’s “Anti-Roadmap” is presented as a direct lesson from that period, where unexpected breakthroughs, such as a dramatic drop in the cost of vision AI, highlighted the need for a more fluid strategy.

IoTeX’s leadership has communicated that this new direction is a commitment to transparency and iterative development. “The winning strategy in an AI-accelerated world is adaptability,” the team stated . By focusing on these broad challenges rather than a fixed plan, IoTeX aims to build a resilient and self-sustaining network capable of connecting the burgeoning world of AI with real-world data and devices.
